Health Programs

In the summer of 2006, we coordinated the first doctor and pharmacy visit to the town to give our kids check-ups and some life-saving interventions for some of the worse-off older folks and others.

The entire town turned out to the event. The doctor, a young Cuban, and a load of pharmaceuticals arrived by mule. We got a disturbing profile of our students' health. The children are suffering from severe malnutrition, parasites and water-borne pathogens.

We now need to add health care to our other urgent priorities so that our students are healthy enough to learn.

Ongoing Medical Care: We are now establishing a health care clinic in the village. This requires maintaining regular visits from the doctor, establishing a dispensary for drug prescriptions and hiring a health care worker to run the dispensary.

We will also recruit and train five health agents to conduct an in-depth health and economic census of all households in our area. This census will help us understand the scope of need for ongoing medical care and also provide the data with which to launch the inoculation program.

Inoculation Program: Poliois a disease that had once all but disappeared from Haiti, but was now coming back due to a lack of inoculations. One 12 year old boy in our village has been stricken by polio and now spends his life sitting in the dirt in front of his family’s hut.

Polio is a disease that had once all but disappeared from Haiti, but is now coming back due to a lack of inoculations. Infectious diseases are especially devastating to undernourished children and elderly. As our health clinic and census data base is established we will institute a comprehensive immunization program.

Clean Water Project: Au Centre depends on a small spring ¼ mile from the village and water is carried by hand in small jugs. The spring is subject to contamination. Our students (and others in the town) are often sick from the bad water. Water scarcity makes hygiene and all aspects of life more difficult.

Our plan to bring clean water to the village involves 5 phases:

Phase 1: Do the plan and budget to capture water from a high mountain spring and pipe it to the village.
Phase 2: Control pollution of existing spring by installing a sanitary tank.
Phase 3: Find financing and build the water system.
Phase 4: Plan and budget for composting latrines in the village.
Phase 5: Get the latrine program financed and constructed.
